The business produces protein rich product called mahlakeke (it is a protein bar made from termites’ powder, oat, sugar, honey and banana).
Challenges/Needs:
When the owner visited Seda, Martins Nature Care was faced with the following challenges:
• The owner wanted funding but lacked the skill and knowledge to develop a business plan.
• They needed assistance with product testing.
• The business needed proper financial management systems to manage its cash flow.
• Lack of proper marketing was also identified as one major challenge facing the business.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
An assessment of the business was conducted, and the following recommendations were made and implemented:
• The client was also assisted to apply for funding through the Nyda grant funding.
• Business start-up 1 course was offered to the client in 2018.
• The business has been assisted with implementing proper financial systems and recordings.
• He was invited to participate in trade shows and Pop-up markets organized by Sedfa and stakeholders such as Mopani District Municipality and Leda.
• The client was also assisted to apply for funding through the Nyda grant funding.
• Business start-up 1 course was offered to the client in 2018.
• The business has been assisted with implementing proper financial systems and recordings.
• He was invited to participate in trade shows and Pop-up markets organized by Sedfa and stakeholders such as Mopani District Municipality and Leda.
Outcome Details:
The following outcomes were a result of the interventions that were implemented:
• The business secured funding of R30 000 from NYDA which was utilised to purchase office and production equipment.
• The client was assisted to test his products, and they are now SABS approved.
• The financial recording process has improved due to availability of proper financial recording systems.
• The client has gain significant market share, currently supplying retailers such as Mopani Aqua Spar and Letaba Fruit and Vege.
• The company’s annual turnover has risen by 95% from R237 985 to R464 071.
• The number of jobs sustained is four.
• The business secured funding of R30 000 from NYDA which was utilised to purchase office and production equipment.
