When the client visited Sedfa, PME Bricks was facing difficulties identified as follows:
• They needed assistance with access to funding but didn’t know how and where they could be funded.
• The business was faced with operational issues such as poor product quality and low productivity.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
After conducting a business assessment, the following recommendations were made and implemented:
• Sedfa developed a detailed business plan which was completed and forwarded to the Technology Transfer Assistance (TTA) to seek financial assistance for a brick manufacturing plant.
• It was also recommended that the business be assisted with product testing intervention for the bricks to comply with SABS requirements.
• The client was selected to participate in the workplace challenge offered by Productivity SA with the objective of assisting them to enhance their productivity.

Outcome Details:
The business experienced the following outcomes after the intervention:
• An amount of R801 186 was approved through Sedfa‘s Technology Transfer Assistance (TTA). The funding was used to purchase a new fully-fledged dual brickmaking plant with pan mixer, conveyer belt and moulds.
• The market for PME Bricks has grown significantly. Most of the customers are residents and businesses in building construction.
• The bricks are in the process of being tested to comply with the requirements and standards outlined by the SABS.
• Its revenue has risen by 97%, from R815 238 to R1 604 379 pa.
• The number of permanent employees increased from ten (10) to thirteen (13), including the owner.
