Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: The core activity involves the on-site manufacturing of household paper products, including toilet paper rolls (currently flat-pack and in development for core/cylindrical rolls) and paper serviettes. A secondary line includes the mixing and packaging of household liquid detergents. This in-house production allows for quality control and cost management.
Challenges/Needs: Development of a core (cylindrical) toilet paper product. Technical expertise for product formulation and manufacturing. Professional packaging design and branding. Regulatory labeling and barcoding for packaging. Formalized marketing strategy and materials. Brand awareness and customer acquisition beyond local reach. Strategic guidance for business growth and scaling. Preparation for entry into broader retail and wholesale markets.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: Upon registering with the Thabo Mofutsanyana SEDFA branch, a dedicated Business Advisor conducted a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of Sinclair’s Tissues. The evaluation confirmed that the primary constraints were technical in nature, requiring expert product testing and standards verification.
To address these challenges, SEDFA implemented a targeted intervention by facilitating a formal partnership between Sinclair’s Tissues and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). The Business Advisor managed the referral process, which included preparing the business for engagement by assisting with the compilation of product samples, documentation, and a clear brief outlining the required tests for both existing tissue products and the proposed core toilet paper prototype. This collaboration with SABS aimed to conduct rigorous product quality and safety tests, ensuring compliance with national standards (SANS).
Outcome Details: The strategic intervention, particularly the facilitated engagement with SABS, delivered significant and measurable outcomes for Sinclair’s Tissues. The direct correlation between this standards-based intervention and business performance is evident in the substantial increase in annual turnover from approximately R110,000 to R190,657.46, driven by improved customer trust and product competitiveness.
Additionally, the business expanded its operational capacity, increasing its workforce from two to four permanent employees, thereby contributing to local job creation. These combined results demonstrate a successful enhancement of the enterprise’s sustainability, compliance, and growth trajectory, directly aligning with SEDFA’s objectives of fostering competitive and resilient small businesses.
