Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Retail of General Goods: Sells everyday household items such as groceries, toiletries, cleaning products, and basic clothing. Offers convenience products to local residents, especially those in rural areas with limited access to large retail stores.
Gas Refills: Provides LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) refilling services, which are essential for cooking and heating in areas without electricity or with unreliable supply. This service adds value and attracts regular foot traffic.
Additional Services: Airtime and electricity sales. Basic stationery or school supplies. Seasonal products (e.g., school uniforms, festive goods). Lotto, vouchers, and subscriptions.
Challenges/Needs:
Makabaza Trading Enterprise faces several operational challenges, including limited access to working capital, which affects its ability to maintain sufficient stock levels. Operating in the rural area of Morokweng Village also presents infrastructure issues such as unreliable electricity and transport. The business competes with both formal and informal retailers, and compliance requirements like CSD registration can hinder access to formal procurement opportunities. The client visited Sedfa with an aim of getting assistance with accessing financial support for the purpose of expanding the business. A Small Business Assessment Tool was used to conduct an assessment, and a few recommendations were made to avert these challenges.
