Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Operating from the owner's residential premises, the spaza shop serves the surrounding community by offering a range of grocery items and cooked food. Naledi Trading Enterprise plays a vital role in providing convenient access to everyday essentials, contributing to local food security and informal economic activity. The business is committed to maintaining affordability, quality service, and community engagement, with aspirations to grow its product offerings and customer base over time.
Challenges/Needs: Naledi Trading Enterprise (Pty) Ltd, a small spaza shop operated by a single owner, faces several operational challenges. These include limited staffing, cash flow constraints, and restricted access to bulk purchasing, which affects profitability. Operating from a residential property also limits space for expansion. The business struggles with visibility due to minimal marketing and faces competition from other retailers. Compliance with regulations, lack of digital tools, supply chain disruptions, and the absence of formal business planning further hinder growth and sustainability. The client visited SEDA with an aim of getting assistance with accessing financial support for the purpose of expanding the business. A Small Business Assessment Tool was used to conduct an assessment, and a few recommendations were made to avert these challenges.
