Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: As a general merchandise retailer, it provides staple groceries such as maize meals, rice, flour, sugar, and cooking oil, along with packaged foods, beverages, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and mobile airtime vouchers. Although specific details about product listing are not available, the store’s consistent operation and listing in formal business directories suggest a stable and resilient business model. Orefilwe Mini Supermarket plays a vital role in the local economy by ensuring access to everyday necessities, supporting local suppliers, and contributing to employment in the area.
Challenges/Needs: Orefilwe Mini Supermarket faces several challenges common to small and informal retailers in rural South Africa. These include rising supply chain costs and inflation, which affect product pricing and customer affordability. Limited access to finance and formal trading infrastructure also restricts the store’s ability to expand or modernize. Additionally, informal businesses like Orefilwe often operate with minimal legal protection and are vulnerable to external factors such as weather disruptions and fluctuating consumer demand. These challenges can hinder growth, reduce competitiveness, and impact service delivery. The client visited SEDA with an aim of getting assistance with accessing financial support for the purpose of expanding the business. A Small Business Assessment Tool was used to conduct an assessment, and a few recommendations were made to avert these challenges.
