Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: In 2007, Mr Thomas Nkwinika and his wife, Mrs Mikateko Ivy Nkwinika established Gimbo Bricks and Sand and formally registered it as a subsidiary of Khoma-Ndlati General Trading. Gimbo Bricks and Sand is an emerging brick manufacturing and sand supply company located at Makosha village, alongside the Giyani – Malamulele main road under Giyani Local Municipality in Limpopo Province. Its main activity is manufacturing building and paving bricks in different sizes. The company is also involved in building sand supply.
Challenges/Needs: • They needed assistance with access to funding but didn’t know how and where they could be funded. • They were facing tough competition and didn’t have enough resources to market their business. • It was difficult to measure the financial performance of the business because of lack of records. The business didn’t have a proper financial management system to record transactions.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: • Seda appointed a Service Provider to develop a detailed business plan which was completed and forwarded to the Technology Transfer Department (TTF) in order to seek assistance with machinery for expansion purposes.


• It was recommended that the client be assisted with the design, print and installation of marketing materials such as directional signage.
• The client was assisted with access to finance through the Asset Assist Programme.
• The other intervention was to develop and implement an accounting system which would be used to record and maintain proper financial records of the business.
Outcome Details: • An amount of R432 057 was approved through Seda‘s Technology Transfer Fund (TTF). The funding/grant was used to purchase a new dual brickmaking machinery and R280 000 was utilized to purchase a forklift.
• Through the Asset Assist Programme (ASP), the company was assisted to purchase production boards at a cost of R216 750.
• The business has a proper financial system in place and its cash flow is now properly manageable.
• The market for Gimbo Bricks and Sand has grown significantly. They obtained a permanent contract to supply Cashbuild Malamulele and Giyani branches with bricks.
• Its revenue increased by over 57%, from R2 651 863 to R10 357 630 per annum.
• The number of employees increased from thirty-two (32) to thirty-eight (38).
