Omapez (Pty) Ltd t/a The Hills Guest House is a 100% black-owned and 50% female-owned business situated in the Newcastle sub-urban area of Aviary Hills in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. The company was registered in 2017 by the owners, Mr. & Mrs. Mshengu and the business started operating in 2021. Omapez operates in the tourism sector, providing accommodation services to a large corporate clientele, in the private as well as the public sector. The company currently turns over R1,947,125.00 annually and employs 9 permanent staff.
At its formation in 2021, Omapez started the guest house with only 3 rooms. Over time, the business has added 5 rooms and boasts a total of 8 rooms on the owned and existing property. Additionally, Omapez is renting 4 rooms from a next-door property owner, to augment capacity. The plans to put up a 32-room boutique hotel are in place and the building plans have been approved by the local municipality. In 2020, Omapez joined the online booking platform ‘Bookings.com”, where the majority of leads are sourced from and is also active on the government online booking platforms viz. Tourvest and TWF.

When the owners first approached Seda the business had challenges of penetrating the market as they were still new in this highly competitive market. The growth of the business was stagnant and the sales were very low. The owners needed assistance to be able to market the business adequately.

As a result of Seda's intervention, Omapez has increased its client base amid a challenging economic environment. As a result of Seda’s support and interventions, the business has become more visible to the local community, thus attracting and broadening its clientele. The company achieved the following improvements:
• Turnover increased by 61% from R1, 209, 291.00 to R1, 947, 125.00 (Improvement Assessment Period), a significant turnaround considering the highly competitive nature of this sector.
• The company increased employment from six (06) people to nine (09) people employed.
• Over the last two years, Omapez has been accommodating employees from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health, where at any given point in time, over 40 guests from the Department of Health are accommodated per month.
