Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: General house cleaning (dusting, sweeping, mopping) Deep cleaning Spring cleaning Move-in / move-out cleaning Post-construction cleaning Carpet and upholstery cleaning
Challenges/Needs: The business encountered these key challenges. • Limited market visibility and brand awareness making it difficult to attract and retain a consistent customer base. • Inadequate marketing skills and resources, resulting in low sales volumes and underutilization of services. • Cash flow constraints, especially common in start-up and small businesses, affect daily operations and the ability to reinvest in growth. • Limited access to finance and working capital, restricting the purchase of equipment, expansion of services, and employment of additional staff. • Strong competition from established cleaning and carwash businesses operating in Upington and the surrounding areas. • Operational capacity limitations, including a small workforce and limited equipment, which may affect service turnaround times. • Skills gaps in business management, such as pricing, financial management, customer relationship management, and compliance. Irregular demand and seasonality, particularly in carwash and cleaning services, which can impact revenue stability. • Compliance and regulatory challenges, including health and safety standards, labour regulations, and municipal by-laws. • Logistical and operational costs, such as transport, water usage, detergents, and maintenance of equipment, which can reduce profit margins.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: The following interventions were proposed and implemented to address the
challenges faced by Iyazi General Services (Pty) Ltd:
1. Business Plan and 5-year Cashflow Projections – SEDFA assisted the
enterprise in developing a detailed Business Plan and five-year financial
projections tailored to the company’s unique operational environment and
growth ambitions.
2. HR and Payroll Policy Implementation – A comprehensive HR and payroll
policy framework was developed and implemented for the business. This
included procedures for recruitment, onboarding, performance management,
leave management, and disciplinary processes. In addition, a payroll system
was set up in line with statutory requirements, including PAYE, UIF, and SDL.
These measures improved compliance, clarified employee roles, and
strengthened workforce management.
3. Strategic Tender Support and Subcontracting with ACSA - Iyazi General
Services received strategic non-financial support and facilitation in tender
preparation, costing, and quotation development. The business was equipped
to respond to procurement opportunities and was awarded a short-term
subcontract with the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA).
Outcome Details: The interventions yielded the following results for Iyazi General Services (Pty) Ltd:
1. HR and Payroll Policy Implementation – Stronger compliance, better
workforce management, and reduced administrative risks.
2. Strategic Tender Support and Subcontracting with ACSA - This
intervention formed part of SEDFA’s broader enterprise development
ecosystem aimed at strengthening market access and supplier readiness for
women-led, youth-owned, and inclusive enterprises. The subcontracting
opportunity enabled the business to gain practical experience in servicing a
large institutional client, improve compliance and operational standards, and
enhance its track record, thereby positioning Iyazi General Services for future
tender opportunities within both the public and private sectors.
3. Increased Turnover - The increased operational capacity and improved
efficiency enabled the client to service a larger contract. As a result, the client
recorded a turnover of R579 200,00, during its first year of operations.
4. Employment - The business has experienced growth in its workforce,
increasing from two (2) employees to five (5) permanent employees, including
the company directors, reflecting the addition of three (3) new permanent
positions.
