Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: The core purpose of the business is the production and sale of baked goods and confectionery, including cakes, koeksisters, homemade pies, biscuits, and speciality treat boxes. The target market includes local families, working professionals, students and young adults, event planners, churches, community organisations, health-conscious shoppers, and tourists. Sales are generated through direct orders, pre-orders, home pick-up, local delivery, pop-up stalls, subscription boxes, and collaborations.
Challenges/Needs: The main challenges that limited the achievement of the business objectives included limited production capacity due to home-based operations, rising input costs for ingredients and utilities, constrained working capital, and reliance on owner-managed labour. These factors placed pressure on profitability and restrict the pace of expansion. Although Ms. Perceline Norman had demonstrated resilience and commitment in building her brand, which had fast become a famous brand on social media pages, the business required further structured guidance to strengthen its operational and strategic direction. This created a clear need for continued mentoring and coaching to equip the director with the skills and confidence necessary to manage growth, improve product consistency, and navigate market opportunities. Amongst others, access to local markets also proved to be a significant barrier. Despite producing unique bakery products, the business lacked sufficient marketing platforms to showcase its products to a broader customer base, including the retail space. Without market visibility, sales growth remained slow, limiting the business’s ability to generate sustainable revenue. Together, these challenges highlighted the need for structured business development support, continued local market access opportunities, and financial interventions to enable Bake N Shine Enterprise to grow from a small-scale bakery into a competitive and compliant enterprise.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: A series of targeted interventions were implemented to strengthen the business and
position it for sustainable expansion. Recognising the entrepreneur’s need for continued
guidance, Ms. Perceline Norman was enrolled in the ILO (International Labour
Organisation) GYB/SYB Programme. This support provided structured training and
mentorship, which helped Ms. Perceline Norman enhance her business management
skills, improve operational efficiency, and make informed decisions necessary for scaling
production.

To address the difficulty of accessing local markets, the business was given the opportunity
to exhibit at the Heroine Awards. This exposure not only increased brand visibility but also
resulted in significantly improved sales, demonstrating the strong market potential of
bakery products when showcased in high-traffic environments. Complementary to this,
Bake N Shine Enterprise is in the process of being assisted with marketing material to
strengthen the business’s brand presence and support consistent promotion across
different platforms and events.

The client was further assisted with the development of a Business Plan. To overcome
financial constraints, facilitation of access to funding has been carried through the
application of the Asset Assist Programme and the Frances Baard District Municipality
MSME Equipment Support Programme. This support aims to enable Bake N Shine
Enterprise to acquire the necessary equipment, secure raw materials, and cover
operational expenses, thereby unlocking production capacity and business growth
opportunities. Collectively, these interventions directly respond to the challenges identified
in the background—bridging gaps in skills, market access, compliance, branding, and
financing, to ensure that Bake N Shine Enterprise evolves into a competitive and fully
compliant bakery enterprise.
Outcome Details: As a result of the funding and post investment intervention, Bake N Shine Pty (Ltd) has
grown in leaps and bounds. The enterprise experienced growth in terms of turnover and
sustained employment. The turnover increased by 741% from year-end 2024 to 2025, rising
from R 10 000.00 to R 84 195.70. Additionally, the employment was increased with three (3)
employees and sustained with one employee.
