Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: The business is owned by Motlatso Moketla who runs the business on full time basis. The owner has always been passionate about fashion from a very young age. Motlatso has a hearing disability but did not allow her shortcoming deter her. She started the business from nothing, worked hard to learn the technical side of the business. She started by supplying the products to the family members and friends. The business operated for a while as a hobby more than anything. The products gained popularity over time and became a center of attraction for Madibeng people. The business is specializing in the manufacturing of African Traditional Wear and School Wear. Motlatso has learned to be creative, to have an eye for color, texture and pattern, the ability to visualize things in three dimensions, technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment construction and to enjoy following trends in fashion and clothing. The business designs clothes and accessories. The business normally work from 9am to 5pm, but sometimes works longer hours when preparing samples for buyers or collections for events. The business works in a homemade small workshop in a form of a single garage. The business is offering the following services:
Challenges/Needs: The business challenges have been lack of business skills, no enough capacity and keeping basic records.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: The client’s problems were discussed with the business advisor. An assessment was conducted through visiting the client premises and interview process.

(i) Business assessment
The assessment helped with financial projections, identification of strengths and weaknesses. This analysis generated a plan of action, as a result; Seda intervened as follows to help the client:





(ii) Exhibition, Sekgosese
The client was assisted to exhibit own products at an exhibition event at Sekgosese shopping complex. She managed to create networks and leads to improve business.

(iii) Access to funds
The business was assisted to apply for funds of R100,000 from SEFA. The funds were used to buy equipment to increase the business capacity. The business capacity is not where its supposed to be but the current capacity has helped uplift the business.

(iv) Technical training
The client was taken through technical training to improve product quality. The training involved learning some of the complex techniques to produce high quality products. This assisted the client to be able to compete in the industry.
Outcome Details: The business has grown and sales have increased from R50,000 to R482,538, respectively. This is an increase of 865%. The business’s number of employees has also increased from 1 to 6 as at September 2025.
