Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Pink Print Farm operates as an agro-processing and retail business, specialising in the production of high-quality meat products. The business processes and supplies a variety of products, including: • Russians • Sausages • Beef and chicken patties • Mince These products are supplied to local spaza shops, shisanyamas, and households, forming the backbone of the business while also supporting the steakhouse and mobile kitchen concept.
Challenges/Needs: In 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdowns, Pink Print successfully introduced a small steakhouse within its processing facility, which kept the business afloat during tough times. However, as the business worked toward Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) compliance, regulations required them to discontinue the in-house restaurant since food standards prohibit preparing cooked meals in the same space used for meat processing. This created a setback, as the steakhouse had proven to be a promising way to diversify operations and meet local demand. To revive this concept, the business sought to establish a separate, fully equipped mobile restaurant on-site and introduce delivery services, a first for the rural Maphumulo community. This expansion would not only fill the gap of having no decent dining facilities in the area but also provide convenient food delivery to households, creating a sustainable new revenue stream.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: Through Sedfa’s Asset Assist Programme, Pink Print Farm secured 100% grant funding of R242,000.00. The funding enabled the business to acquire:
• Two delivery motorbikes to launch home delivery services.
• A modern mobile kitchen to safely operate the steakhouse separately from the processing facility.
This intervention allowed the business to restart and expand its steakhouse concept while fully meeting compliance standards.
Outcome Details: The intervention has delivered significant measurable results for Pink Print Farm, strengthening both its financial performance and social impact in the community:
• Turnover Growth: Revenue grew from R471,345.00 to R690,000.00, reflecting a remarkable increase of R218,655.00 (46.39%). This growth is directly attributable to the purchase of motorbikes and the mobile kitchen, which expanded both market reach and service delivery.
• Job Creation: Employment doubled, with the team expanding from 4 employees to 8 employees, creating 4 new positions for local community members.
• Profitability: Net profit rose dramatically from R37,750.00 to R144,324.00, representing an increase of R106,574.00 (282%), highlighting the sustainability of the business post-intervention.
