Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Traditional African Ginger Juice manufacturer
Challenges/Needs:
The business faced several challenges when it started. The owner did not have formal business skills like financial management, business planning, administration, or marketing. The business had very few customers and didn’t really understand the market it was operating in. The juice was not packaged properly and had no labelling, and the product was not tested or approved by bodies like the SABS. There was also no access to funding, proper equipment, or local supply opportunities, which made it hard for the business to grow or become sustainable.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
When the client walked into Sedfa, the Business Advisor Mr. Maruping welcomed her and first did a full business needs assessment to understand the challenges. After the assessment, he registered the client to attend Food Safety Training and Basic Inventory Management Training to help improve business operations. Sedfa also helped the client apply for funding from National Office to get their product tested and approved by the SABS. Mr. Maruping gave further support with professional product labelling and packaging to improve the product’s look and shelf readiness. The client was also referred to small local retail stores around Welkom, where they were able to place their product on the shelves and start reaching more customers.
Outcome Details:
After receiving support from Sedfa, the business has shown great improvement. The business’s turnover grew by 29%, showing that it is now more profitable. Their product “Dada Ginger Zing” is now professionally labelled and packaged, which has made the brand more visible and attractive to customers. The product was tested and approved by the SABS, which improved its quality and built trust with buyers. The business now supplies to small retail stores and reaches more customers through local exhibitions. With better financial management and inventory control, daily operations have become more organised and efficient. The owner also gained important business and operational skills from the training provided. Overall, the business is growing steadily and is now ready for more opportunities in the local market.
