Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Bakery
Challenges/Needs:
Despite the business’s potential, CHARLWILL’S Bakery initially faced several challenges:
Limited equipment restricted production capacity and variety.
Lack of retail space limited visibility and customer walk-ins.
High competition required a balance between affordability and quality.
A need to secure consistent supply channels and off-take agreements for sustainability.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
Through the Sedfa Assist Program, Charwill’s Bakery received essential bakery equipment and a supply of ingredients that allowed the business to scale its operations. With the increase in production capacity, the bakery could better fulfil its off-take agreement with Spar, expand its product range (including gluten-free and traditional items), and improve consistency in quality. Additionally, the team began setting up a retail outlet opposite the production facility to directly serve the public and build a stronger brand presence.
Outcome Details:
The support from the Assist Program significantly boosted the business's performance. Turnover increased by 77%, rising from R348,584.00 to R616,117.00. Employment doubled, growing from 3 to 6 staff members, creating vital jobs in the community. The business is currently expanding with the launch of a retail shop to attract more walk-in customers and enhance visibility.
CHARLWILL is building a reputation not just for great products, but also for friendly service and a welcoming environment that enhances the Jeffreys Bay experience.
