Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Their mission is simple yet impactful to deliver food and essential goods efficiently and affordably to customers living in township neighbourhoods, where access to these services has historically been limited. Kasi Delivery does more than just move goods—it connects people to convenience, care, and choice. This has made them a trusted brand, particularly for residents who rely on consistent access to fresh meals, groceries, and medication.
Over the years, the company has built an impressive client base, including national franchises such as KFC, McDonald’s, Debonairs Pizza, and Spar, as well as respected local institutions like Ntando’s Butchery, Zero4One Restaurant, and an ever-growing number of independent food outlets and informal vendors. These partnerships reflect both the quality and dependability of Kasi Delivery’s service offering.
To carry out its daily operations, Kasi Delivery runs a fleet of 30 motorbikes and four tuk-tuks, operated by trained delivery riders who are predominantly recruited from the same communities they serve. Over 90% of these deliveries are made within Gqeberha’s townships, including Motherwell, Zwide, Kwazakhele, New Brighton, and KwaDwesi Extension. The business has grown into a key player in Gqeberha’s informal economy, offering a delivery infrastructure that was previously inaccessible to many. Their continued success stands as proof that with innovation, community insight, and strategic support, township enterprises can thrive and lead in spaces traditionally dominated by corporate giants.
Challenges/Needs:
By 2023, Kasi Delivery was at a critical juncture. Their existing fleet could no longer keep up with the overwhelming volume of daily delivery requests, leading to service delays and missed opportunities. The business was turning away orders due to a shortage of motorbikes, limiting both revenue and impact.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
Kasi Delivery submitted an application to the Asset Assist Programme and mentorship further helped the business refine its operations, pricing structures, and customer management systems, ensuring long-term viability and improved service delivery to township communities.
Outcome Details:
The business was supported with the acquisition of 10 new motorcycles following a successful application. A direct result of the intervention resulted in an increase in their annual revenue from R945 532 to R1 261 060 million, reflecting a 33.4% growth in turnover. Furthermore, the team grew from 19 to 56 employees, creating job opportunities for youth in township areas.
