Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Although the cooperative's primary business is goat farming, they have over the past years started crop farming as well. This decision was motivated by the availability of arable land where the cooperative is situated. The cooperative plants and harvest vegetable crop, nuts, and legumes. In addition to goats and crops, the cooperative breeds other animals. They have about 35 mixed breed cattle and 1 Bonsmara bull. They have about 14 Sheep, bushveld, Marino and Dopers. They breed about 20 mixed chickens with 2 hens. These are sold through auctions, to the general public and to other farmers to generate revenue.
Challenges/Needs: The client visited SEDA with an aim of getting assistance with accessing financial support for the purpose of purchasing additional livestock, feeds and medication, and material to cover their property. An assessment was conducted, and a few challenges were identified. The area of operations is remote and has limited market for the business. The business did not have adequate resources and some farm equipment was aging and not effective.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: Seda’s diagnostic assessment revealed that there is a need to assist by facilitating access to finance. The cooperative was assisted to complete and submit application forms for CDSP. Compliance issues were addressed for this application.
Outcome Details: The cooperative received funding to the value of R1 050 000 through the Cooperative Development and Support Programme. They used those funds to purchase Goats, goat structure, feeds and medication, fencing, and drilled an additional borehole.
