Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
The enterprise was established in May 2017 as a 100% black woman-owned business by Zandile Kumalo. The business initiated a farming enterprise and established its first conventional leafy green plantation in 2018. The enterprise operates from a 2000 sqm farm managed by Zandile Kumalo through a signed lease agreement with VUT Science Park.
Inspired by agri-tech that is eco-sustainable and clean tech growing practices, the enterprise focuses on growing fresh vegetables locally year-round to provide healthy, nutritional food for people in South Africa. They utilize various systems, including the A-Frame NFT System, Ebb and Flow system, Vertical system, and Open bag system, to cultivate a variety of 13 different crops on the farm. The enterprise also operates on 1.5 hectares of land and has erected a 250 sqm greenhouse tunnel equipped with a vertical NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system.
The current focus is on the production of leafy greens, including living heads, mixed pillow salad-packed lettuce, and herbs.
The company has two permanent staff members: the CEO and the Technical and Operations Manager. The founder, Zandile Kumalo, has received training in hydroponics through ARC and Future Farms SA and has completed business training with WIBC and NYDA.
