Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Personal Caregiver and cooking
Challenges/Needs: Although her business had a positive impact, limited resources and equipment restricted her production capacity and ability to grow. Balancing caregiving duties with cooking and selling food was also demanding, and she was operating mostly alone. She saw the opportunity to expand her business but lacked the tools and manpower to do so effectively.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: To boost her business and scale up her operations, Thotyelwa applied for support from the SEDA
Informal Micro Enterprise Development Programme (IMEDP). Through this initiative, she received
critical business equipment that helped her streamline her food preparation and service.
With the improved infrastructure, she was able to cook larger quantities of food more efficiently,
serve more customers, and improve the quality and consistency of her offerings. This allowed her to
shift her focus more strategically towards business development and caregiving expansion.
Outcome Details: Following the support from IMEDP, TC & NE Trading experienced a significant boost in performance.
Her turnover increased from R138,900 to R165,440, reflecting a 19% growth. More impressively,
employment in her business increased from 1 to 5 employees, a 400% increase, enabling her to create
meaningful job opportunities in her community.
Thotyelwa is now preparing to launch an aggressive marketing campaign, targeting social media
platforms and old-age homes that currently lack caregiving services. She has also identified a growing
market — families who cannot afford formal care facilities — and plans to fill this gap by providing
accessible and affordable caregiving support in her community.

Client Feedback

Client Comments: “I am truly grateful for what I received through the IMEDP
programme, it helped me grow my business and help more people. But I still have very big dreams — I want to help even more vulnerable people who cannot care for themselves and create more jobs for caregivers in my community
