Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Accommodation, Catering and Events Management Services
Challenges/Needs: The owner started the business with her own capital and performed very well prior to the Covid 19 pandemic. During the pandemic the business suffered and although it recovered well, it needed support with the upgrading of facilities to attract more customers. Some of the property’s assets, such as furniture, appliances and linen, were outdated and in short supply. This made it difficult for the business to compete with establishments which offered modern accommodation.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: To address the business shortcomings, the client applied for the 2023/2024 Asset Assist Programme to acquire various assets that the business needed to upgrade their self-catering units. It was anticipated that through this programme, the guesthouse would be equipped with microwaves, sinks, smart TVs, dining chairs, other kitchen appliances, new double beds as well as crockery and cutlery.
Outcome Details: The application was successful, and the equipment received through the Asset Assist Programme had positive spin-offs for Akkerdam Bed & Breakfast Pty Ltd. The business turnover increased from R1 082 290,00 in 2024 to R1 168 873.00 in January 2025. Additionally, the business managed to create part-time employment for four (4) people.
