Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: The business specializes in the sale of products such as turmeric olive oil soap, face cream, cream body scrub, aroma bath rock crystals, and tea tree hand and body wash liquid.
Challenges/Needs: The company faced significant market limitations due to its operations being confined to De Aar. With a relatively small customer base, growth opportunities were constrained, making it difficult for the business to expand and reach new customers. The limited market size hindered the company’s ability to scale and maximize its revenue potential. Furthermore, the business had been experiencing stagnant turnover growth and had not been able to create new jobs due to the limited market opportunities in De Aar. This pressing challenge necessitated the need to explore alternative markets.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: In September 2024, ZinoM Consulting participated in a two-day pop-up market hosted by Sedfa, which provided exposure to new customers and networking opportunities. Additionally, Ms Mbalula won the Pixley Ka Seme District Pitching competition in the category of Homegrown SMME of the Year and Township of the Year, further solidifying the brand's credibility and recognition. Sedfa also procured a signboard and a pull-up banner for the business during the current financial year to enhance its marketing efforts.
Recognising the need to access broader markets, Ms Mbalula sought guidance from Sedfa on potential growth strategies. The Business Advisor suggested that the company apply to become a seller on Takealot, South Africa’s leading online retail platform with over 3.7 million active customers. This would provide the company with increased visibility and potential sales beyond the local market.
The owner was enthusiastic about the opportunity and gave Sedfa approval to proceed. The Business Advisor prepared and submitted a motivation on behalf of ZinoM Consulting. After careful evaluation, Takealot approved the application on 5th February 2025.
Sedfa also recommended ZinoM Consulting to be a part of the SAICA SMME Development Programme, which is currently mentoring five small businesses based in De Aar for a period of 12 months. This mentorship program aims to provide essential business development support and strategic guidance to enhance operational efficiency and scalability.
Outcome Details: With its successful listing on Takealot, ZinoM Consulting now has access to a significantly larger customer base. This expansion is expected to drive increased brand awareness, boost online sales, and enable the company to compete in the broader skincare and wellness industry. The move to e-commerce aligns with modern consumer shopping trends, positioning ZinoM Consulting for sustainable growth and success.
