Business Activities: For most small manufacturers in South Africa, the key challenges around human resource management and access to finance are attributed to lack of skills by management or owners. This was the case at MNDZ Trading, the following pertinent challenges were found. • Staffing and Skills: MNDZ Trading, struggled to find and retain skilled staff such as welders, assemblers, and benders. • Training and Development: Providing ongoing training to ensure staff meet health, safety, and customer service standards is essential, but limited resources made it difficult for MNDZ Trading to invest in training programs. • Compliance with Labor Laws: South African labour laws, including the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Sectoral Determination for manufacturing, require compliance with minimum wages, working hours, and benefits, which can be complex and costly for small businesses. Finance • Cash Flow Management: Managing cash flow is a constant challenge for small time manufacturers, especially when dealing with variable income, rising material prices, and operational costs. Access to short-term finance to cover gaps can be limited. • Access to Alternative Financing: Options like crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending, and venture capital are available but may be unfamiliar or inaccessible to many small-town manufacturers owners in South Africa.
Challenges/Needs: MNDZ Trading, visited Sedfa in early 2022 as an operating company that needed business advisory services and business development services. A GAP analysis, ACO and Critical Planning Exercise (CPE) assessment were conducted to determine the needs of the business. Thus, it was recommended that the business be assisted with, a Business Plan, HR and Payroll Policies, QMS Certification, Financial Management and Implementation, including to Access Finance to assist the business on how to ensure sustainable business growth and manage their finances.

Intervention Details: The interventions for HR and Payroll Policies, QMS certification (In Progress at SABS), Financial
Management and Implementation, were developed and implemented between the years 2023
and 2024. After undergoing the comprehensive listed interventions, MNDZ Trading has
successfully transitioned from a home-based operation to a bustling industrial establishment,
marking a significant milestone in its growth trajectory.

The key benefits include:
• Strategic Direction: A well-structured business plan outlines the manufacturer’s
mission, vision, target market, and competitive positioning, helping owners make
informed decisions regarding their market strategy.
• Financial Planning: It provides detailed financial projections (income, cash flow,
expenses), helping small business owners understand expected costs, profit margins,
and breakeven points. This is essential for financial sustainability.
• Business Plan serves as a roadmap for the small business, guiding its operations,
financial management, and growth strategies.
The company has also managed to create 6 job opportunities since its openings in the past 2
years and managed to sustain 2 jobs. It is still planning to expand and grow more opportunities
for young people in the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality.
The company has recorded an increase in turnover compared to the previous years, they have
recorded an amount of R 913 298,00 in the 2023/24 financial year, which is higher that the
recorded turnover of R 458 449,00 in the 2022/23 financial year, which shows a significant
turnover increase of 50,20%.
The client was assisted with, Signage, Marketing and Promotional Material to increase the
visibility of the warehouse. The QMS Certification intervention is currently in progress at SABS.
