Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: BPSC Carpenters offers a diverse range of products, including kitchen furniture such as cupboards, office furniture like desks and office credenzas, and tables. The business also provides refurbishing and restoration services, breathing new life into old furniture pieces.
Challenges/Needs: The COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on BPSC Carpenters, disrupting operations and creating significant financial strain. In order to continue operations during this challenging period, the business utilised the KwaMashu Furntech facilities. While this provided a temporary solution, several challenges arose because of this arrangement. Firstly, due to the high cost of machinery and equipment relative to the business's turnover, the financial strain was considerable. Additionally, because of the shared nature of the facility, production time was limited, which capped their production capacity. Other challenges included a lack of working capital to complete projects and manage cash flows, making it difficult to cover monthly expenses. Furthermore, BPSC Carpenters faced difficulties in growing their client base, which hindered the business's ability to expand and reach its full potential. Despite these obstacles, BPSC Carpenters has shown resilience and is working towards overcoming these challenges.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: To help BPSC Carpenters overcome their challenges and grow their customer base, Seda provided invaluable support. In July 2024, Seda enabled the business to exhibit at the House and Garden Show—a key event for reaching potential customers and showcasing their products. Seda covered the cost of the exhibition stand, ensuring that the business could participate without the added financial burden.

In addition, Seda provided marketing materials to enhance the business’s visibility and help promote their offerings. This initiative aimed to support BPSC Carpenters in building brand awareness, connecting with a broader audience, and ultimately increasing their customer base.
Outcome Details: As a direct result of participating in the House and Garden Show, BPSC Carpenters secured various contracts worth over R40,000. This significant achievement highlights the impact of the exhibition in helping the business increase its visibility and attract new clients. Additionally, there are several other contracts currently in the negotiation phase, further demonstrating the potential for continued growth and success stemming from the exposure gained at the event.

Client Feedback

Client Comments: Between July and September, I’ve made over R120,000 from the exhibition. I’ve also confirmed work that was in the pipeline. Additionally, I’m still receiving calls for quotations and have a lot of leads coming in. The exposure from the House and Garden Show has truly opened up many opportunities for me, and I’m excited about the continued growth and potential for the business.
