Simengempumelelo Primary Co-operative is in the business of clothing design and manufacturing .
The Co-operative has five directors all from previously disadvantaged backgrounds so they started the
business in 2020 and their headquarters are at 252 Ngwevana Street, NU9, Motherwell in Port
Elizabeth. The Chair of the co-operative, Mr Zilindile Given Pama is involved in the business on a fulltime basic and has over 20 years industry experience to manage a business of this nature. He has an
N3 Qualification in Tailoring and Design from Nonqoma Technical College, KwaZulu- Natal. The cooperative started off with the five directors involved as the employees, but has grown to a staff
compliment of twelve employees (including the directors).
The co-operative is manufactures the following:
• School Uniforms e.g. school tunics, skirts
• Track suits
• Golf shirts
• Church gowns and church uniforms
The vision of the co-operative is to supply and deliver a quality product to its customer. The markets they
serve consist mostly of local residents, neighbourhood schools and churches
Challenges/Needs:
Lack of branding to boost the visibility of the business
• The business required advisory assistance to grow their market.
• Insufficient cash flow to acquire necessary machine.
• The business needed professional marketing materials to present to potential clients
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
A member of Simengempumelelo Primary Co-operative approached Seda and was assisted by Thabo
Ngwadla at the Nelson Mandela Bay Branch. After conducting an assessment, the business gaps were
identified, and the following improvement interventions were implemented.
❖ A priority intervention included assisting the business in creation a very dynamic and eyecatching marketing material which will appeal to target market.
❖ Seda also assisted the client with an application to the Co-operative Incentive Scheme (Imvaba
Fund) for the grant funding wh

Through Seda’s business support the business/ co-operative has realised the following benefits:
• The business is now attracting more clients due to the improved visibility.
• Profit has increased and there is also increase in the number of clients.
• The turnover of the business has increased from R 723 500 to R840 000.
• Employment has grown from 06 to 12 employees (including the directors)
• The Co-operative was funded by SEFA, a funding worth R343 414 of which R50 00 was a grant,
because of TREP funding their production capacity has increased tremendously
• The business is now attracting more clients due to the improved visibility.
• Profit has increased and there is also increase in the number of clients.
• The turnover of the business has increased from R 723 500 to R840 000.
