Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Manufacturing of clothing and accessories
Challenges/Needs:
1. Background
Royalty by Ntombizodwa is a clothing brand that was created by Ms Ntombizodwa Skosana, a young black lady from Atteridgeville. She is a self-taught fashion designer with over 10 years of retail experience. She operates the business from the garage of her home where she sews and sells clothing. The business was registered in 2015 and in the same year created the clothing brand where she offers ready-to-wear clothing designs that incorporate African prints, in particular the Ndebele cultural prints as the owner is Ndebele herself. The business also offers customised clothing items for special occasions. The main customers of the brand are women between the ages of 25 and 45 years old. The owner uses social media to advertise her business, which has helped her generate some sales but most of her sales come from word-of-mouth advertising. To increase the visibility of the brand and attract more customers, the owner plans on moving her business to a store front in Nkomo Village, a shopping centre in Atteridgeville.
2. Findings
The owner is not accurately recording the monthly sales and expenses of the business as well as planning for the growth of the business. The owner lacks financial management skills such as compiling monthly profit and loss statements as well as budgeting. The business does not generate enough sales to pay the owner a salary and as a result, the owner uses the funds of the business to pay for her personal expenses. As the business offers ready-to-wear clothing items, consistency and standardisation in the quality of clothing items has been a challenge and this may be due to the owner not being skilled enough to achieve this. Therefore, there is a need for sector-specific training. The business is struggling to attract clients to its premises and is need of signage and marketing material. The owner is also in need of formal training to improve her social media marketing efforts. The business uses a second hand small domestic machine which is unreliable and often breaks down as she works. The business does not have capital to invest in the purchase of a new machine or suitable equipment for her operations.
