Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Poultry Farming based in Winterveld
Challenges/Needs:
The Business operates as small scale poultry farm in Winterveld Pretoria. The Cooperative has 5 active members in the business and operates on a fulltime basis. They also grow vegetables, but Poultry is the cooperatives main business activity that it plans to grow to the level of penetrating the corporate sector. The Cooperative members approached some corporate retailers to establish if they can supply them with poultry items. They were advised that they need to show that they have attended some poultry training to ensure that their poultry items meet the corporate sector operational Standards. They were also advised that they need an environmental impact assessment to enable them to service the corporate sector and work with the huge number of chickens needed by the corporate sector.
Intervention Insights and Results
Intervention Details:
Seda took one of the Cooperative members to Poultry training. On the return of the member from the training he trained the other members on all aspects of Poultry farming learned at the course such as medication, hygiene and overall poultry establishment housekeeping. This was a 5 Day training initiated by Seda. This initiative also gave the cooperative the opportunity to engage with other small scale poultry farmers and establish partnership networks. In addition, to this Seda is now working with the department of Agriculture to assist the business with an Environmental Impact assessment.
Outcome Details:
The outcome of the training is that all the cooperative members now have been taught how to operate a poultry business and are more productive in their establishment. Fatality rate of their chickens has also decreased due to operational lessons learning. They have managed to sustain their 5 jobs and increase turnover from R720000 at the time of training to R165 000 at the end of August 2024
