Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
The Bread Shack (Pty) Ltd was established in November 2020 after its 3 directors lost their jobs during the COVID-19 hard lockdown. They pooled their personal savings in order to purchase a domestic oven and stove. As bread was identified as an essential service, Dibuseng, Nokuthula and Noki enhanced their skills in baking and started a bakery business.
The business started operating from home in Vaal Park, Sasolburg and targeted residents and schools in the surrounding area by offering the following products:
• Bread
• Buns
• Vetkoek
• Cookies
• Dumplings
The business furthermore approached Kota/Skhambane businesses in the area to offer bread delivery to their businesses. Using their personal vehicles for delivery, the business grew significantly from there. The business also approached other retailers such as spaza shops, garages and general dealers in an effort to increase sales.
The business was then incubated by Innovation Hub and supported with interventions.
They also provide their product to other entities, such as day care centres, local clinics and the municipality.
Challenges/Needs:
• One of the major challenges that was identified through the Assessment of Company Operation (ACO) was a lack of sufficient operational space as the business was growing fast.
• The business also wanted to professionalize its packaging in order to be competitive in the market.
• Due to the increased demand for delivery, the business needed a delivery vehicle that would have the capacity for trays to be delivered.
• It also needed to get additional machinery to meet with improved business demand.
