Umphafa Berg Tours (Pty) Ltd is a 100% youth-owned tourism business based in Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, Dragon Peaks. The business is owned by Mr Lungelo Dlamini and was formally registered in 2014. Umphafa Berg Tours was conceptualised by Mr Dlamini’s father in 2000, having recognised a need for tour operators in the Valley View area. After Mr Dlamini’s father passed away in 2018, he took over the business as he was already familiar with it, having worked in the business and had been trained as a Tour Guide and Tour Operator by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA). Initially the business offices were located at Okhahlamba Local Municipality and have since moved to Champagne Valley, Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, which is an ideal location for their target market as the area has tourists’ attractions and is very popular with hikers.
The purpose of the business is to provide adventure experiences – including Travel Itineraries, Shuttle Services, Tour Guides, Hiking, Mountain Climbing and Gear Rental.
Challenges/Needs:
An assessment conducted by Seda showed the business was experiencing the following challenges:
• Lack of marketing material, and lack of business signage on premises to be identified by potential clients.
• Lack of proper business growth management.

Intervention Details:
• The business was assisted with the development and installation of signage on operational premises and car branding to improve their visibility, as well as promotional material to assist in their marketing efforts.
• The business also attended the Grow Your Business workshop to assist them with strategies to improve their operations and overall business growth management.

Outcome Details:
• The business increased its turnover by 70.5% from R227 805,50 to R773 659,43 due to their brand being more visible and the improved quality of marketing material, which enable them to now attract more clients.
• Employment of the business increased from 4 employees to 8 employees.
