Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Manufacturing (Bakery)
Challenges/Needs: Sewela Florence Papo is the founder and sole owner of Amofe Bakery. The business operates from the owner's home at 30566 Mashahleng village, Mapela, approximately 35 km from Mokopane. It commenced operations on December 1, 2022, with the primary goal is to create employment for the owner and meet the demand for bakery products from local residents and tuck shops. Amofe Bakery specializes in manufacturing bakery products, including bread, rolls, buns, and custom celebration cakes. The main customers of the business are spaza shops and local neighbours that purchase bread and buns daily. Mrs. Papo learned to bake from home as part of her household chores while growing up. When she started baking seriously, she already had solid experience with scones and buns. To learn more about cake and bread baking, she used online platforms like YouTube and bought some formulas online. In December 2022, Mrs. Papo used her own savings to purchase baking equipment and raw materials. She also reconnected with one of her childhood friends from Bochum who introduced her to a supplier of bakery raw materials at an affordable price. Challenges Florence Papo first visited Seda Waterberg branch on 10 May 2023 seeking business development services. During consultation and assessment, the following challenges were identified: • Non-compliance, i.e., the business was not registered with CIPC and SARS. • There was a lack of both financial planning and record keeping.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: • During the consultation, the client was introduced to the CIPC system and successfully registered her business with CIPC. She also obtained a tax clearance certificate from SARS.
• She attended a five-day Financial Management training course that assisted her with financial recording and planning.
Outcome Details: • Turnover increased from R 143 797.00 to R 357 330.00 per annum.
• Two new jobs were created, increasing employment from 2 to 4 jobs.
• The business owner is able to record its finances accurately using MS Excel.
